Receiving lymphatic facilitation to decrease swelling from surgery or injury requires that both your lymphatic system and cardiovascular systems are healthy. The increased fluid potential during this work adds fluid to the cardiovascular system. If your heart is already challenged by maintaining current fluid volume, more fluid can increase the work load. If your venous system is challenged by returning blood to the heart, adding more fluid can adversely affect this too. Should you have a blockage or dysfunction with the lymphatic system itself with significant regional edema (lymphedema), a practitioner certified in ‘manual lymphatic drainage’ will be better equipped to manage the long term issues through added techniques, compression bandaging and further specialized care.
